Prospecting for Your Business: Getting over the Fear of Rejection

Prospecting can be a very scary word. Many business owners don’t like to put themselves out there because they are afraid of what will happen. They don’t want to hear the word no or face rejection so they don’t even try. However, that isn’t the right way to run a business. You need to find new leads so that you can grow your business.

Prospecting for Your Business: Getting over the Fear of Rejection

So, what is stopping you? The fear of rejection? Here are some tips to get over it so you can continue to grow your business.

There is nothing wrong with feeling hurt over rejection. The first thing that you may need to do when you get rejected is to actually face it. If it hurts, acknowledge that. Take a few minutes to think about your feelings and then move on.

Figure out what you can learn from it. If you learn something from the rejection, it is going to be worth it. You might realize that you need to change your script (or even try to ad-lib instead of reading from your script). You may realize that you were pushing too hard for a sale instead of trying to help someone with his or her problem. Take these notes and do better next time and you may get your desired result: a yes!

Try to stay positive. Too many people freeze the first time that they hear the word no. They stop prospecting all together because all they can see are rejections after rejections. However, if you do this, your business will never go anywhere.

Instead of catastrophizing, and going through a negative thought spiral, think positive! Think about what you learned and how you are going to do better next time.

Most people are afraid to put themselves out there because they don’t want to get hurt. They fear rejection and, instead of trying, they don’t let themselves (or their business) grow. It helps to know that everyone hears the word no but it is how you deal with it that is important. You need to take the time to deal with your hurt feelings, learn from it, and stay positive. You can do it!
